Echinacea spp

Echinacea (coneflower) products are herbal preparations derived from the root and above ground parts of the flowering plants Echinacea purpurea, Echinacea pallida and Echinacea angustifolia. Echinacea has a long history of medicinal use and is widely used in the treatment and prevention of upper respiratory tract infections. Claims in relation to cancer are that it can support the immune system, reduce the adverse effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy and has some anticancer effects.

Reiki

Reiki, a form of energy healing that originated in Japan, is a system of natural healing administered by the laying on of hands and by transferring energy from the Reiki practitioner to the recipient. It is sometimes used as a palliative or supportive treatment of cancer patients. Only few studies of Reiki have been published; most have methodological limitations and are thus not conclusive.

Methodology

CAM Cancer follows a strict methodology to ensure that the summaries are unbiased and of high quality. Using pre-defined guidelines and templates, the summaries are based on systematic searches, a critical evaluation of current research and are fully peer reviewed.

Review process for CAM Cancer

Each new summary is reviewed by two independent reviewers, the respective Responsible Editor and the Senior Editor, and is approved by the Advisory Committee. If required, the summary is revised by CAM-Cancer’s professional proofreader.

Task of scientific reviewers

The aim is to ensure that CAM Cancer summaries are prepared in accordance with the standards outlined in the manual.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness-based clinical interventions are mind-body modalities that may encompass multiple components: psycho-educational elements, mindfulness meditation exercises, cognitive-behavioral interventions and movement exercises. Core practices are sitting meditation (breath awareness, focused attention), body scan (awareness of sensations in the body, 45 minute exercise), Hatha Yoga (mindful movement), walking meditation and insight meditation. The two most used mindfulness-based clinical interventions in oncology are mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT), 8-week standardised group programs. MBCT further includes elements from cognitive behavioural therapy.

Boswellia spp

Boswellia species (frankincense) are a genus of trees found in India, Northern Africa, and the Middle East. For medicinal purposes mainly the resin is used, and Boswellia serrata is the most commonly used species. Boswellia extracts have been used orally, topically, and as aromatherapy. Boswellia extracts are claimed to be inhibitors of inflammatory processes, possess anti-cancer actions, and possibly be effective against perifocal oedema in brain cancer, radiation-induced dermatitis, and other inflammatory conditions.

Massage (Classical/Swedish)

Classical/Swedish massage involves mechanical manipulation of muscles and soft tissues. Practitioners claim that massage may have several positive effects in the treatment of people suffering from cancer, including psychological improvements (e.g. reduction of anxiety and depression) or alleviation of physical symptoms associated with cancer (e.g. reduction of nausea and strengthening of the immune system). Massage has also been promoted to improve overall quality of life.

Aloe vera (Aloe)

Aloe vera is a cactus-like plant and the gel from its leaves and juice are used for a wide range of problems. In oncology, Aloe vera is applied topically for radiation-induced skin problems, oral submucosal fibrosis (a precancerous condition) and chemotherapy-/radiation-induced inflammation of the digestive tract.
